At Roots Door Company, we strive to make the process of buying your home's front door as easy as possible.
What to Know
There are approximately 10 important decisions that need to be made before we begin building your custom entryway door.
Understanding the components and options available can help you make an informed choice and accelerate the building process. We have broken these steps into the below simple yet comprehensive guide to help you navigate the process before purchasing your front entry door:
1. Size of the Door
Entry way doors come in four standard sizes:
- 36 inches wide x 80 inches tall
- 36 inches wide x 96 inches tall
- 42 inches wide x 80 inches tall
- 42 inches wide x 96 inches tall
Choose the size that fits your entryway and Complements the aesthetics of your home. If you require a custom size than the above, we are usually able to accommodate those needs as well but will require a custom quote. Please email info@rootsdoorcompany.com if you have a custom size need for your entry door
2. Single Door or Double Door
Decide whether you prefer a single door or a double door. While double doors can provide grand entrance and are ideal for wider entryways, single doors are suitable for narrow openings and are standard inmost home builds.
3. Sidelights or No Sidelights
Sidelights are narrow windows on one or both sides of the door. They allow additional light into your entryway and can enhance the overall appearance of your door. Consider if you want sidelights and if so, how many.
4. Transom or No Transom
A transom is a window above the door. It can add height and elegance to your entryway, allowing more natural light to enter. Decide if you want a transom included in your door design.
5. Glass Type
For doors with glass components (including sidelights and transoms), you have several glass options:
- Clear Glass (Standard)
- Rain Glass (Additional $75 per window pane)
- Water Glass (Additional $75 per window pane)
- Frosted Glass (Additional $75 per window pane)
Each type of glass offers a different level of privacy and aesthetic appeal.
6. Hinge and Threshold Color
The color of the hinges can add a finishing touch to your door. Choose between:
- Brushed Nickel
- Oil Rubbed Bronze
7. Swing
Decide on the swing direction of your door:
- Left Swing or Right Swing: Determines which side the hinges are on when viewed from inside the door.
- Inswing or Outswing: Determines whether the door opens inward or outward.
8. Door Jamb Width
The door jamb width depends on the thickness of your wall:
- 4 5/8 inches for a 2x4 wall
- 6 5/8 inches for a 2x6 wall
